Starting From Zero, Again

Building a social network from scratch in a new country is one of the skills TCKs develop early. Adults who arrive in a new posting are often surprised to find that the skill does not transfer as easily to civilian, non-expat environments. The expat community has natural gathering points. A random city does not.

  • Where are the natural gathering points for internationally mobile families in this specific location?
  • Is there an international school community, expat group, or faith community that might include people with similar backgrounds?
  • Have you looked for the local TCK community — online groups, FIGT affiliates, TCKid local chapters?
  • What did you find most useful about the communities in previous postings, and how do you replicate that here?
