Mental Health Challenges in Cross-Cultural and Expat Life: Practitioner Insights
How can we better support the mental health of people living across countries and cultures? The answer may sound obvious. What was much less obvious was how. So we turned to the professionals already working with this population.
What are they seeing? What are they doing differently? What have they learned from practice? And does supporting globally mobile people require us to adapt some of the approaches we are traditionally trained to use?
Because the country someone has left matters as much as the country they are living in. The languages in which they learned to feel, relate and make sense of themselves matter as much as the repeated transitions and all the relationships interrupted and rebuilt. And family systems, belonging, identity, privilege, loss and the organisations surrounding mobility matter too.
And sometimes, what looks perfectly adaptive from the outside deserves a little more curiosity from the inside.
Now, this paper does not claim to provide the final answer. Actually, quite the opposite.
We hope it helps start a conversation that has been missing for too long, about what good, context-aware support might look like for people whose lives increasingly cross borders in many different ways.
